Cellular panels in cultivation
Systems of cultivation with honeycomb panels bring numerous advantages in crops.
Containers impermeable to the roots cause different root deformations. Such deformations can be more or less serious depending on the shape of the pots and the development of plants. The most known is the spiralization of the roots, but it is not the only one.
It is therefore useful to use cellular panels such us FERTILPOT: a biodegradable culture jar in vegetable fibers. It is used in floriculture, horticulture, ornamental nurseries, etc. During cultivation in FERTILPOT the roots quickly cross the walls. In the open air, their growth stops, the root buds are pruned and the secondary roots develop throughout the volume of the pot. This phenomenon is called aerial pruning.
The advantages are very evident: the volume of the pot is crossed 100% by a very ramified root hair, unlike the containers with waterproof walls where a few very long roots exploit especially the perimeter of the pot. This different quality of the root system largely explains the clear difference in development, with the same volume of the pot, between two identical plants grown in FERTILPOT and in plastic pots.
Moreover, when the plant is transplanted or repotted, without removing the pot, the roots immediately awaken, eliminating the shock of transplantation. This difference is especially noticeable in difficult conditions (cold, drought, unfavorable season). The absence of deformation in the root system ensures a good rooting of the plant and better exploitation of the soil. Finally fertilpot degrades quickly and turns into organic material.
While fertilpot should be filled with the substrate mixture of your choice, if you want a ready-to-use product you can use FERTISS: it is a ready-to-use crop cube intended for the propagation of plants by cutting, both from seed. The substrate, composed of fine blonde peat, perlite and vermiculite, is retained by a non-woven material that is crossed very quickly by the roots. This makes young plants easy to handle, fast and easy to transplant.
Both are available in a wide variety of sizes and packaging. They can also be delivered without a panel, however there are usually honeycombs specially designed for each size of clod or fertilpot.
The advantages of using these two innovative cultivation systems can be summarized as follows:
• Very dense and active radical capillaries
• Spreading of the roots throughout the volume of the pot
• Higher growth
• Possibility to transplant in advance
• No transplant shock
• Faster recovery time
• Increased volume of soil rapidly occupied by roots
• Suppression of the adaptation phase after implantation
• No root deformation
• Acceleration of multiplication and growth
• Decrease in plant densities
• Suppression of collection time and cost of disposal of plastic jars
• Suitable for organic farming
